The vibrant, orange-coloured solar-electric boat, with a seating capacity of 30 passengers, has officially started operating on the Sarayu River in Ayodhya. Offering comfortable seating and semi-open sides, the boat allows commuters to experience the beauty of the river and the sacred city without any disturbances such as engine noise, vibrations, or fuel smells.
Ayodhya is revered as the birthplace of Shri Ram and is home to the sacred Shri Rama Janmabhoomi temple. Hindu pilgrims from around the world visit the temple to worship Ram. The city holds immense religious significance and has become a prominent tourist destination, drawing millions of visitors daily. In 2024, Ayodhya welcomed over 13.6 crore visitors, both domestic and international. The Shri Rama Janmabhoomi temple alone attracts approximately 1.5 lakh visitors daily, surpassing the Taj Mahal, which was previously India’s top tourist attraction.
One of the most celebrated events in Ayodhya is Dev Deepavali, held every October on the ghats of the Sarayu River. This grand festival commemorates the return of Shri Ram after his 14 years of vanavaas (exile). The ghats come alive with the light of countless diyas (oil lamps) placed near the riverbanks, creating a mesmerising spectacle. Dev Deepavali not only honours Shri Ram’s return but also highlights the city’s deep-rooted cultural and spiritual traditions.
Other notable landmarks in Ayodhya include Ram Ki Paidi, Ram Katha Park, and iconic ghats such as Guptar Ghat, Raj Ghat, Ram Ghat, Lakshman Ghat, Janki Ghat, and Naya Ghat. Additionally, the city is home to several temples that are deeply revered by devotees.
Ayodhya also offers a rich cultural experience with its traditional sweets, a variety of authentic vegetarian cuisines, and bustling markets selling unique handicrafts and religious artefacts that reflect the city’s heritage. Its travel infrastructure further enhances its accessibility, with the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport providing global connectivity and the Ayodhya Dham Junction railway station ensuring seamless travel for domestic tourists.
The solar-electric boat, named Maruti 2, is owned by the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA). This is the second solar-electric boat launched in the city by the department, which plans to expand its sustainable vision by introducing similar boats in other cities of Uttar Pradesh. Designed and built by Navalt, Maruti 2 is part of the popular Marsel series and is the first small solar-electric boat in its size segment certified under the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).
Packed with advanced features, the boat is powered by twin DNV-approved Manta LFP battery packs with a combined capacity of 20 kWh, which drive two 8 kW Mako electric outboard motors. The roof-mounted 3 kW solar panels charge the batteries and extend the boat’s range. Manoeuvring is handled by ORCA electric steering, ensuring smooth control. The vessel incorporates two independent systems, providing redundancy and ensuring reliability and safety. The catamaran structure, designed and certified by IRS, enhances stability and safety, while onboard equipment such as life jackets, lifebuoys, and firefighting gear meets stringent industry standards.
With a maximum speed of 8 knots, Maruti 2 can cruise for approximately four hours at a speed of 6 knots on a full charge. The boat began operations on 1st December 2024 and is already attracting tourists eager to experience the breathtaking views along the Sarayu River. Operating from Sarayu Ghat, it offers rides for ₹100 per person for a short trip. Services are available daily from 9 AM to 6 PM, with on-the-spot bookings.
